Does a trumpet valve guard affect the sound quality of a trumpet?
Warmahorn, a maker of a neoprene valve guard, answers the question of whether a trumpet guard affects the sound quality of a trumpet with ‘Yes, of course’. They go on to point out that this alteration in sound is not always negative.
You’ll have to judge with your horn and your chosen valve guard.
If you do not like the sound with a valve guard installed, then do not use one.

If you can be diligent about wiping down your trumpet after you play it, you can keep your trumpet looking new, and may find that a valve guard is unnecessary.
If your trumpet is epoxy lacquered you may find this unnecessary. We use epoxy lacquer. It is easier to apply and much more durable. As to whether epoxy lacquer affects the sound compared to regular lacquer, or to whether unlacquered is better than any lacquer, those are topics for other posts.
