My business was started in March of 1999 based on the idea that band parents need an alternative to buying new student trumpets that often cost $1000, or more.  We are presently in our 11th year and sell about 100 reconditioned used student trumpet a year.

Many beginning trumpet players quit playing after the first year or switch to other instruments so the lost on reselling a new trumpet can be about half.  By buying used should you need to resell it most of the cost can be recovered.

Solar Impulse is a Swiss solar-powered plane in the air now, towards a goal of a 24 hour flight. It will run on battery power through the night.  It can fly as high as 27900 feet (8500 meters).

Tomasz Stanko is known as perhaps the greatest jazz trumpeter in Europe. He’s appearing in New York at the Yardbird Suite, 11 Tommy Banks Way.  Trumpeter spices jazz roots with urban sizzle.

Nicholas Duncan has been selected to perform in the National Association for Music Education’s Concert Band in Washington, D.C. The band, under the direction of Anthony Maiello, director of instrumental studies at George Mason University, performed at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts on June 27.

Bach Union in Like a Lion, Out Like a Lamb

• What if you went on strike and nobody noticed?

Yes, the Bach Stradivarius will continue to be reproduced, but its workforce is different now, as the company would not fire the ‘temporary’ workers it began to hire in 2006 when the strike started. Time will tell if we label associate serial numbers with the pre-strike and post-strike production.

Years ago the now defunct F.E. Olds company, expanded its production and moved its operation from LA to Fullerton, CA. A decline in quality was perceived, and today collectors refer to ‘Fullerton Olds’ vs. ‘LA Olds’.

Katrina Darrell is on her way to Hollywood after appearing on the American Idol television Show dressed only in a bikini. Her talent has earned her the nickname ‘Bikini Girl’. We’re guaranteed to see her in at least on more appearance on American Idol, but not in a bikini. So, judge her talents for yourself, as she sings the song, ‘Vision of Love’.

Grammy-award winning trumpeter Freddie Hubbard has died, following a heart attack the day before Thanksgiving. Freddie Hubbard’s career started in the late 1950′s, and was pretty much continuous but for a lip injury in the 1990′s. In 1992, he developed an infection of his upper lip and there were doubts he would play again. However, he had played more in recent years to favorable reviews. In 2006, the National Endowment for the Arts honored Hubbard with its highest honor in jazz, the NEA Jazz Masters Award.

A crucial tool bag floated away during repair work while astronaut Heidemarie Stefanyshyn-Piper was lubricating a joint on a wing of solar panels on the space station. The tool bag was one of the largest items ever lost by a spacewalker. While there are straps to keep such things from occurring, they weren’t in use. The full story is here.

Chinese Students Find U.S. Education a Good Buy

China’s economic boom allows more students to afford overseas education. They like U.S. schools for out-of-class activities, open environment, and diversity. Chinese enrollment grew by 8 percent in fall of 2006 and 20 percent last year.

According to CNN, A couple walking along the south arm of the Fraser River in British Columbia found a left New Balance running shoe about 11:30 Tuesday morning.

If it is a human foot, it would be the sixth real foot found in British Columbia since 2007. One foot was a hoax so authorities are proceeding slowly.

The feet appear to be naturally seperating from the bodies due to decomposition, but authorities know little more.

All have been running shoes. Male and female feet have been found. Authorities have published pictures of the shoes. The CNN story is here. A few more details are in this Canadian Press article.

When police visited the home of Margaret Bernstorff in Evanston, IL. they discovered two skeletons and one badly decomposed body in their rooms covered with blankets. One had been dead for 30 years. The coroner has determined that all died of natural causes, but their deaths were never reported. Margaret, 90 years old, never invited anyone inside her home, and never reported the deaths of her siblings. The full story is here.

Tuba man, aka Edward McMicheal, was a street musician in Seattle who seemingly could play almost any song on a tuba. For the last 10 years, you would likely find Tuba man at SuperSonics, Seahawks and Mariners events in Seattle.

You would have been able to see Tuba Man this year’s sporting events, but some teenagers mugged him while he waited for a bus. He appeared to be recovering from his injuries, but died unexpectantly last week. As a result, the Seattle community has been robbed.

Seattle is now struggling to find a way to honor the memory of a man who played the tuba and brought joy to many.

Justice will prevail. Two are in custody and police will track down the others. However, this year the streets of Seattle will be strangely silent. Tuba man is dead, and we are all diminished…

Pottsboro, Texas – Do you remember the 2000 movie ‘Pay It Forward”?

Well, here’s an example of life imitating art. Tracy Orr was sitting watching people gather in the yard. Tracy’s foreclosed house was up for sale. A stranger, a woman, sat down beside Tracy and struck up a conversation.

Tracy’s emotions caught up with her and she broke into tears. Tracy explained that this used to be her house. It was her house on the auction block today.

A few minutes later the auction started, and the woman Tracy had been talking with started bidding. The stranger bought the house and then told Tracy, “I bought the house for you. You looked like you needed a friend.”

Marilyn Mock, who owns a small business selling flagstone and other rocks in Rockwell, Texas says she can’t just afford to give the house to Tracy, but that they’ll work out how much she can pay for it.

Trumpet basics

The modern trumpet is a brass instrument with three valves. The instrument is played by ‘buzzing’ the lips in the mouthpiece. Pitch is varied by the changing the lips and depressing the valves. Its the highest brass instrument, and used in many forms of music. The most common type is the B-flat trumpet, but the C trumpet is a non-transpositional instrument, i.e. a C on the piano matches a C on the trumpet. A fingering chart for the trumpet instrument is available. A trumpet would be about 6 1/2 feet long if the tubing were unbent.

The literal translation of the phrases is ‘Every soul shall have the taste of death’ and ‘All that is on earth will perish’. Sony will replace the background song. Muslims say the words of the Koran should not be set to music.

Lionel Ferbos has been playing New Orleans Jazz since the Great Depression.

 He was born July 17, 1911 and has appeared at the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival since 1970, its first year. Read the complete story here, from The Canadian Press.

What is a student trumpet?

A student trumpet is a trumpet intended for students.

As with any major item, some manufacturers are better than others. Bach, Blessing, Conn, Conn-Selmer, and Yamaha are some of the manufacturers we recommend. We’ve found the quality lacking in Chinese and India trumpets so far. Ask your band director if you’re unsure.

Monel is a nickel-copper and zinc alloy that was patented in 1906. Its considered a ‘natural alloy’ since it can be produced by refining ore containing nickel and copper in the ratio it is found in the natural nickel-copper ore.

Monel is more expensive than stainless steel and highly resistant to corrosion. Its popular in marine applications, eyeglass frames, and musical instruments.

There’s an excellent story of monel entitled ‘A Century of Monel Metal: 1906-2006′, which contains this account:

On January 30, 1906, U.S. patent 811,239 was issued to Ambrose Monell, then president of the three-year old Inco, for “a new and useful improvement in the manufacture-of nickel-copper alloys.” As is stated in the Monell patent, the process included smelting, “bessemerization,” calcining, and oxide reduction.While Browne’s plan to make German silver from the nickel/copper alloy was indeed possible, it was determined that the resulting alloy of about 70% nickel and 30% copper-the natural ratio of those elements in the matte ore-had some quite interesting properties as produced. The new alloy was silvery white, brighter than nickel, stronger than steel, and more resistant to corrosion in saltwater and sulfuric acid than bronze. In honor of the company’s president, the product was named “Monel” metal.

In WWI, the dog tags were Monel, and some were monel in WWII, but Monel was dropped as a requirement sometime during WWII. More information here.

So, a Monel valve is a valve made from a corrosive-resistant nickel-copper alloy.

They date the trumpet back to 1500 BC, and note that the trumpet is a musical instrument with the highest register in the brass family. They have great references on the history of trumpets and the construction of trumpets .

Taking Care of Your Trumpet

All trumpets sold by Crone Trumpet have been thoroughly gone over and serviced by a professional repair technician and everything necessary to put the trumpet in excellent playing condition has been done. In addition, a 45-day warranty is provided on all our trumpets; however, good playing condition is very dependent on the correct use, care, and handling of the trumpet by the user. The trumpet is then play tested by an experience trumpet player and valve action, tone, and intonation are checked.   The end result is a used trumpet that looks almost like new and plays correctly with crisp valve action,  good tone and intonation.
